CA Democrats make last-minute push to unionize California child-care workers

The Sacramento Bee reports that California's Democratic legislative leaders have launched a last-minute push to allow unions to organize child-care providers who work out of the home.

Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg have drafted legislation that would deliver a major victory to labor allies who have been fighting for years for the right to organize the more than 40,000 family child-care providers operating in California.

Assembly Bill 101, sponsored by the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union, would affect both licensed family child-care providers, who can care for children in their homes, and certain license-exempt providers, including grandparents, relatives and neighbors receiving state subsidies to care for one family.

As a California resident what you need to know is that this bill has not been given a legitimate hearing in a single policy committee, nor has time been given for adequate input from the people it impacts.  Simply put this bill is being strong armed through the legislative process in the waning hours of the legislative year for one purpose: to avoid public scrutiny and to catch opponents "flat footed," so they will not be able to mount any significant opposition. It is an abuse of power and makes a mockery of the Legislature and the legislative process.

This type of gross violation of the legislative process is becoming all too common. It begs the question of why there is a need for policy committees and year long sessions. The Legislature could save the taxpayers a lot of money by simply having two weeks sessions where all bills are introduced and passed in a matter of days. This would certainly be better than pretending that public input matters.

Hoffa Threatens GOP At Obama Event: "Take These Son Of Bitches Out"

Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa had some profane, combative words for Republicans while warming up the crowd for President Obama in Detroit, Michigan on Monday.

"We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: The war on workers. And you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. And you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what? They've got a war, they got a war with us and there's only going to be one winner. It's going to be the workers of Michigan, and America. We're going to win that war," Jimmy Hoffa said to a heavily union crowd.

"President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong," Hoffa added.

CEI Unveils Big Labor vs Taxpayer Index

State governments across the country are struggling to balance their budgets; meanwhile, union lobbyists are pushing for better benefits and more handouts. To educate taxpayers about their state governments' priorities, CEI has partnered with Crossroads GPS in a new initiative: the Big Labor vs. Taxpayers Index. States are ranked in 23 different categories and given scores that reflect Big Labor's influence on state legislators and regulators.

The Index provides a national narrative on labor policy. Analyzing 1,150 labor laws and regulations throughout the country, it allows state-level policy makers to learn from the successes and mistakes of their neighbors, and therefore adopt labor policies that are in the best interest of their citizens.
